Hair loss after pregnancy

Mother’s hair loss is an absolutely normal phenomenon after pregnancy but a temporary one too. It does not have any contact with breastfeeding, as it was known. Most women will return to their normal hair growth cycle after 6-12 months from pregnancy.

The majority of new mothers observe that their hair stars to fall (sometimes in alarming amounts) after 3 months after pregnancy. This is a normal physical and temporary change, which is not influenced by the fact that the new mother is breastfeeding.

The hair records along his life cycle a growth phase (called anagen) and a stagnation one (called telogen). At the scalp surface the anagen takes almost three years, while the telogen takes three months, although there could exist some terms variations. During the telogen period, the stagnated hair which remains in the capillary follicle is pushed out by another hair which started his anagen period.

Normally, almost 85-95% of your hair is in the growth phase in every moment of life but the hormonal changes during pregnancy stimulate a growth for the percentage of the hair which is in the growth phase. As a result, a lot of mothers enjoy a head of hair through their pregnancy, because hairs grow more than normal and less of them are falling.

Once with the baby’s birth and with the hormonal changes which follow this beautiful event, a big amount of the hairs from your scalp enter the resting phase. While this phase is followed by hair loss (and the growth of the new one), the new mothers will face with a major hair loss which finishes the stagnation phase.

Hair loss after pregnancy starts after three months after the birth. The period between baby’s birth and the start of the hair loss corresponds to the stagnation phase (somewhere between 1 and 6 months, with a range of 3 months). The hair loss could look more intense if while the pregnancy your hair growth better than usual.

While your pregnancy, you may:

  • Consult your doctor to ensure you have a normal hormonal level during the period in which you are.
  • Go and get a new haircut, or at least cut your hair. Some mothers choose to have their hair shorter than normal, for an easier way which does not take a lot of time to arrange.

After all this gnawing, we are sure you will feel like the luckiest person in the world. Hair loss after pregnancy does not have to upset you, because everything comes back to the way they were.
