The success rate in production and maintenance of a pregnancy through an in vitro fertilization increased considerable in the last years although the differences related to partners age persist (the young couples have a higher rate of success than the older couples). The chances of fertilization are around 27% per cycle (with a percentage of 33% of the births), but these dates vary and take into account a series of different factors as you could see bellow.
The female’s age, more exactly the age and the quality of the ovule involved in the process. If there are used the ovules of the female who lead the pregnancy (and not donated eggs), the success rate for women under 35 years is of 43% per cycle and a percentage of 36.5% births. Instead, this percentage dramatically decreases for women over 40 years. Specialists analyzed a series of in vitro fertilization procedure and concluded that the highest rate of live births was registered after the use of newly donated ovule and the lowest results when mother use her frozen eggs. Yet, the use of these eggs is cheaper (thus a couple affords rather to make more insemination cycles using frozen eggs).
Use of eggs cryopreserved. The rate of success for in vitro fertilization with frozen eggs is a little lower comparing to the fresh ones, because during the process of conservation toxins can be eliminated from the damaged cells which will affect the quality of the collected eggs.
Use of eggs donated. This is a good solution for elder women who’d like to have children. The results of some studies showed that the success rate for women who tried these kind of transfers for in vitro fertilization were almost the same for women between 20-40 years and there were not recorded different results for women between 40-45 years but women over 45 encountered serious problems.
Lately for increase the success rate of the in vitro fertilization more than one embryo are used during the transfer but this solution can have complications as the development of multiple pregnancy. A recent technique which promise good results on long term involve to keep the embryo in a special liquid environment in which there are ensured all the necessary nutrients until after fifth day when the embryo becomes blastocysts. Then the doctors establish which embryo has the highest chances of development and that is transferred in the women’s uterus. This is the way to develop a pregnancy without the risk of a multiple pregnancy.
